Virginia Tech Shooting Claims Two Lives

Deriek W. Crouse, a 39-year-old Army veteran who served as a police officer at Virginia Tech university, was killed by an unidentified gunman who apparently shot himself after the shooting, local media reported. Police officers have found the body of the alleged attacker lying at a parking lot nearby , dead, Bob Carpentieri, a spokesman for the Virginia State Police, told journalists. The victim is survived by his wife and five children, university authorities said.

There is no evident link between the victim and the assaulter, and no clear motive for the attack has been discovered by the police so far, police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said. The gunman was not a student, she added.

State police confirmed that ballistics-evidence testing showed that both Deriek Crowse and the other dead person had been shot by the same weapon, while the police officer’s in-car video had caught a male with a handgun at the time of the murder.

The shooting revived bitter memories of 2007, when student Seung-Hui Cho shot to death 32 people before killing himself. This is the worst such accident in the history of campus massacres in the United States.
