The Sun gives us plenty of vitamin D during the summer months but unfortunately during the winter we do not receive enough through this natural method. Many people do not know the Vitamin D Dosage or how much Vitamin D is too much although studies suggest 4000 IU’s per day is an overdose of this super vitamin.

Generally people in the U.S and Canada from age 1 to 70 so try to have 600 IU’s of Vitamin D per day. Researchers have found that this amount of D vitamin is enough to maintain good health. However very high levels of Vitamin D could be a danger to your health. This is why the Vitamin D Dosage is very important to know exactly how much Vitamin D is too much.

People over the age of 70 in Canada and the U.S. need at least 800 international units of Vitamin D to maintain good health. There have been certain studies that show that too little of Vitamin D in your system can lead to various cancers.     4000 IU per day is not an overdose at all. This is just the maximum dose for which the official health organization can now guarantee, based on the scientific literature, that it won’t do any harm to people of age 9 and older.

    One has to consider that grown up people in the tropics can make 10,000 IU per day from the Sun. The amount of vitamin D you can get from the sun is limited because the UV radiation that produces vitamin D can also destroy it, so after a while in the Sun you get a dynamic equilibrium between production and destruction, the net amount produced being stuck at an amount of order 10,000 IU.

    So, a total intake per day of the order of 10,000 IU should be safe. However, if you specify a tolerable upper limit of 10,000 IU, then that should apply to the amount you get from the vitamin D supplements only. Then one has to be 100% sure that 20,000 IU per day is safe. It is known that some people have become ill from taking more than 50,000 IU per day for a few weeks or longer. It cannot be excluded that in rare cases, people could get ill from a 20,000 IU net dose over a long period of time.

    The tolerable upper limit thus has to be chosen quite conservative because you want to give people some figure of what is 100% safe that applies generally without any additional strings attached.

    I personally stick to 10,000 IU per day in the winter when I’m sure I don’t get any significant amounts of vitamin D from the Sun. In the summer I take 5000 IU per day, which in my case is ok. as I don’t get near the maximum amount of 10,000 I could theoretically get from the Sun.

    This way, I get cose to 10,000 IU per day year round, which is what our great great great great…grandfathers and grand mothers got when they were still hunters/gatherers living in Africa. Our bodies have evolved under this condition, so we should actually ask if it is ok. to take less than this ammount.
