Holiday shopping is upon us and the stores are beginning to get crowds. Whether it be toys for your kids, jewelery for your wife or power tools for your husband finding deals is the name of the game at this time of year. Retailers all across America are looking to get consumers to buy at their store. North America’s oldest toy store FAO Schwarz is located in New York City, but what year was FAO Schwarz established?
The giant toy retailer known for it’s gigantic piano is located on 5th Avenue. Originally opened by Frederick August Otto Schwarz, a German immigrant, the store was originally named Toy Bazaar. It was not until 1889 when the retailer added his initials in front of the Toy Bazaar name, which was eventually dropped. The actual opening of the store was back in 1862, that would be what year FAO Schwarz was established.
In 2009 toy giant Toys’ r Us purchased FAO Schwarz for an undisclosed price. There is currently only the location in New York as the Las Vegas store closed at the beginning of 2010 due to the tough economic times seen in the United States. The FAO Schwarz name continues on today and the store front draws crowds at Christmas time. What year was FAO Schwarz established was a part of the Toys’ r Us scavenger hunt that took place today on the internet, which awarded a $1500 gift card to the grand prize winner.
