Lakehurst Naval Air Station initiates lockdown

Around 9:30 a.m. on June 21 at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey, a delivery truck driver attempted access to the facility. When asked if he had any weapons to declare, the driver said he did have a weapon. He was taken into custody while security personnel investigated. He was released after being issued a ticket.

While the above events were taking place at Lakehurst Naval Air Station, there was a report of gunshots in the area. The 87th Security Forces Squadron responded to investigate. No evidence of a shooting was reported. Investigations did reveal, however, that there were several shooting ranges in close proximity that may have been responsible for the gunshot sounds.

As a customary precaution, the Lakehurst Naval Station closed the gates in a lockdown. The temporary lockdown lasted for approximately one hour while the separate incidents were investigated. The armed delivery man reportedly was carrying the weapon for personal protection. No shots were discharged from the delivery man’s weapon, however, common sense should dictate that taking a weapon onto a military facility is maybe not such a good idea, even if you plan on telling them about it when asked.
