Masters 2011: Lee Westwood Plane Fire

World number 2 Lee Westwood was forced to land his plane shortly after take off from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. The flight scare was because of a cockpit fire and his private jet was forced into an emergency landing. Lee Westwood was on his way to Augusta after the completion of his final round at the Shell Houston Open on Sunday.

masters 2011This pre-Masters 2011 scare most likely shook Westwood up for a little bit but I doubt it will get him off his game. Along for the ride on the plane were his manager, Chubby Chandler, Ryder Cup player Ross Fish as well as their caddies. They began to notice the strong smell of smoke and looked to see the pilots taking a grab at the breathing apparatus. This is when the captain informed the passengers there was going to be a delay going to the Masters 2011.

The plane went into a steep dive but did end up landing safely. Firefighters met the plan on the tarmac and they evacuated the passengers right away. “We were a couple of minutes out of the airport,” Westwood said. “It was a bit scary. It never looks good when you can smell smoke and you turn round and see the pilots have put the masks on.” I wonder if the Masters 2011 is going to be this exciting?
