Matt Lauer: Is He Leaving The Today Show?

The big news form the world of television today is that the Today Show host Matt Lauer is set to leave the show when his contract expires in December of 2012. This news comes after his current co-host Meredith Vieira announced she will be leaving the show this year. Also making the news this week is Lauer’s former co-host Katie Couric who announced she will be leaving the nightly news show that she anchors on CBS. So is this just a rumor that Matt Lauer is leaving or is it true?

Matt Lauer has been a fixture on the Today Show since 1994. He was first a news anchor on the morning program, before becoming the co-anchor in 1997. Lauer has been the co-host for 2 Olympic games opening ceremonies, and has also co-hosted the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade since 1998. With Matt Lauer leaving the Today Show speculation all over the internet rumors are flying about him and Katie Couric joining up on T.V. again.

If stories are true and both Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer areĀ  leaving their spots on the Today Show, who do you think could fill their shoes? Possibly current Today Show correspondents Ann Curry or Natalie Morales could be the new female host, but replacing Lauer will be much harder. He has been a fixture on the NBC Today Show for so many years, people may find it hard to start their mornings with someone else. The contract Matt Lauer has with NBC is still valid for about a year and a half, so we still will get to see Lauer in the mornings until the end of 2012.
