Fort Sumter is located in Charleston harbor, SC. It is the Third System masonry coastal fortification. This fort is best known for being the site which the shots that started the American Civil War were fired. This was called the Battle of Fort Sumter.

Just 2 days before On April 10th 1861 Brig. Gen. Beauregard who was in command of the provisional Confederate forces at Charleston, SC demanded that the Union garrison of Fort Sumter surrender. Garrison commander Anderson resolutely refused. This is why on April 12 the Confederate batteries opened fire on the fort. 2:30 pm on April 13th Major Anderson was forced to surrender For Sumter. They evacuated the garrison on the following day.
