Restrepo: Director Tim Hetherington Killed

Restrepo: Director Tim Hetherington Killed - Tim Hetherington the director of the 2010 documentary Restrepo died today in Libya. His death comes as a result of the injuries he received from a rocket propelled grenade attack (R.P.G) covering the unrest in Libya. The movie, which was also directed by American journalist Sebastian Junger, captures the time the two directors spent together in Afghanistan covering stories for Vanity Fair. Hetherington was a British born photo journalist who was nominated for an Academy Award this year for Restrepo.

Hetherington traveled the world doing what he loved. Visiting places of political unrest was common place in his career. His journey’s to Afghanistan in 2007 and 2008 were the basis for his documentary. Restrepo received the Grand Jury Prize for best documentary at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

Also severely injured in the R.P.G attack this week were fellow photographers Chris Hondros and Guy Martin. Hetherington had tweeted this week about being in the Libyan city of Misrata and the shelling by the Qaddafi forces. He also went on to say that there were no NATO forces in sight. Tim Hetherington will be greatly missed and his skills as a photo journalist will always be remembered in his film Restrepo.
