Wimbledon 2011: Venus Williams, Rafael Nadal Move On

Today from the All England Lawn Tennis Club the 125th running of the Wimbledon tennis tournament kicked off. Opening round action saw American Venus Williams win in straight sets 6-3,6-1. Ranked 23rd in the tournament Williams came out onto to the court in what looked like a 70′s inspired jumper with a zipper down the front. Her next match at Wimbledon 2011 will be against unranked Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan.

Over on the men’s side we saw Rafael Nadal, the number 1 seed, win his match in straight sets 6-4,6-2, 6-2 against American Michael Russel. Nadal came on court all in white with his traditional long shorts. Winning at Wimbledon is nothing new to Nadal as he won the tournament in 2008 and 2010. 2009 winner Roger Federer is ranked 3rd at Wimbledon 2011.

2009 and 2010 ladies champion Serena Williams is ranked 7th this year. She will face off against Aravane Rezai of France on the second day of first round action. The Williams sisters who won the ladies doubles division in 2009 are not playing as doubles this year. Check back daily for your Wimbledon 2011 updates.
