Derek Jeter Hits Number 3000: New York Yankees Shortstop Makes History

Today New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter made history by hitting is 3000 hit. Not only did he get his 3000th hit but he did it in style by hitting a home run. Jeter got the 3000th hit in the bottom of the third inning off of pitcher David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays. Some interesting facts about the hit are it came at 2pm, it was his second hit of the game and he wears number 2.

Derek Jeter has been a member of the New York Yankees since 1995. The Yankees are the only team he has played for in the major leagues. He is the only player on the Yankees to ever reach 3000 hits. Derek Jeter also has the most hits of any current player in baseball today. Next week we will see Jeter in his 12th All-Star game appearance, he was voted in along with 5 other New York Yankee players.

As Jeter crossed the plate today with his 3000th hit he was greeted by his team mates and coaches. Jorge Posada, Jeter’s friend and team mate for almost 20 years, was first to wrap his arms around Derek Jeter. The almost 50,000 spectators in New York rose to their feet applauding Jeter, even members of the Tampa Bay Rays joined in the applause for Jeter. Not only did he get his 3000th hit, Jeter went 5 for 5 on the day and the Yankees won 5-4.
