2011 British Open Leaderboard

Thomas Bjorn has played here before, in 2003, he tied for second place at the Royal St. George’s Golf Club, with Vijay Singh. Ben Curtis won the Championship that year, Singh and Bjorn missed the mark by one shot, or they would have had a 3-way play-off. Today, Thomas Bjorn is the leader, but the day is not yet over. Over 200,000 fans will be on the course during the British Open following the best of the best in golf today.

The first day is behind him, for the U.S. Open Champion, young Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland, who shot two birdies and three bogeys with the balance pars, ended his first round with a plus one score. The world’s golf fans are closely watching to see if Rory McIlroy can manage to win the British Open after setting records with his eight shot win at the U.S. Open. Phil Mickelson from the U.S. has just started play and took a bogey on his first hole. There are so many great golfers here, it will be hard to pick a favorite, any one of them could win with three days left in the tournament.

Is there any particular reason why the sand bunkers are so deep at The Open golf courses?
