Venus Williams left the U.S. Open on day three of the tournament after releasing a statement, saying that she suffers from Sj gren’s Syndrome that affects her energy level while causing fatigue and joint pain. Spectators expected her on Arthur Ashe Stadium court to play German player Sabine Lisicki but Williams decided to exit the U.S. Open and focus on her rehabilitation that would allow her to return to court as soon as possible.

Sweden’s Robin Soderling also had left the tournament, while American-born Christina McHale tops the eight seed after defeating France’s Marion Bartoli 7-6(2), 6-2. Irina Falconi, another U.S. player, managed to defeat 14th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of the Slovakia 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Wednesday.

Russia’s Maria Sharapova won over Anastasiya Yakimova 6-1, 6-1, and will play in today’s evening session of the tournament.

Two Americans, Andy Roddick and Micheal Russell, have had a tough game with Roddick winning by 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. The U.S. Open 2009 champion Juan Martin Del Potro get past Italy’s Filippo Volandri 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 on courts of Flushing Meadows.

Mike and Bob Bryan, defending men’s doubles champions, have lost to Croatian Ivo Karlovic and Frank Moser of Germany by 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in the first round of the tournament. They were last beaten in the first round of a major tournament some ten years ago at the Australian Open.
