Breast Cancer Awareness Month: October

October 1st almost sneaked right in on us while we were all busy doing other things. One main issue that needs to be addressed year round has garnered attention as October serves as the official month for awareness. The national month campaign woks to create a larger view of breast cancer as well as the causes, preventions and cures. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month so make sure you do your share to help.

Since the onset of this national month of awareness for breast cancer began, many may not know that this particular push was driven by a drug company known as AstraZeneca. This is the drug company that manufactures the breast cancer drugs Arimidex and Tanoxifen. The awareness of breast cancer is celebrated with the symbol of a pink ribbon. Breast Cancer Awareness Month officially started in 1985 and the pink ribbon was added in 1993.

Many of the great events that take place nationwide are used as fund raising events to help fight Breast Cancer. One of the largest and most popular is the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure which is the absolute largest event simply because, it isn’t just one event, it’s a series of 5K events worldwide. Other big fundraising events include The Ride to Empower, The Susan G. Komen 3-Day For the Cure and the Global Illumination events. Breast Cancer Awareness Month uses the Global Illumination events to light up some of the greatest landmarks with pink lights.
